How happy are people around the world? The latest data gives us a clear picture.
According to a March 20, 2026 report by Statista, based on the World Happiness Report, people in 147 countries were asked to rate their life satisfaction on a scale from 1 to 10.
Here’s what stood out:
- Finland ranked #1 with a score of 7.8
- Iceland and Denmark followed at 7.5
- The United States ranked 23rd with a score of 6.8
- The lowest scores came from Malawi (3.3), Sierra Leone (3.3), and Afghanistan (1.4)
The rankings are based on how people feel about their lives — not just economic data. Factors that tend to increase happiness include strong social support, higher income, good health, freedom, and trust. On the other hand, loneliness, financial stress, and uncertainty tend to lower life satisfaction.
